Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) in Singapore

Blogs

In the drive to push for productivity in the Singapore construction arena, Building Construction Authority (BCA), Urban Redevelopment Authourity (URA) and other agencies in Singapore are stepping up efforts to encourage the adoption of Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC). PPVC is a modular system where whole rooms or apartment units complete with internal fixtures are produced offsite and assembled on site in the manner of Lego blocks.  These modules come complete with internal fixtures such as lighting, windows and fans. Compared to conventional construction methods, the use of PPVC will not only reduce the manpower required by 25% to 40%, but also reduce the completion time by 15% to 20%.  (bca.gov.sg)

Dr John Keung, BCA’s CEO said, “While the adoption of productive construction technologies such as drywall and system formwork has increased, there should be a greater push to move the industry towards off-site manufacturing for on-site assembly, or Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA). The use of game-changing technologies like Prefabricated Pre-finished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) and Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is a move in this direction. Advanced construction technologies yield more significant manpower and time-savings and also bring about benefits like less noise and dust during construction, safer workplaces and better quality homes.” (splash.sg)

The new National Technological University (NTU) residential halls at North Hill will be the first public high-rise building to use the PPVC method. Like other new hi-tech buildings at NTU, these residential buildings constructed with PPVC have incorporated sustainable features such as energy-saving LED lighting and solar powered systems. The project has also been recognized with the Green Mark Platinum for sustainable building design awarded by BCA, marking the sustainability, flexibility and productivity of adopting PPVC construction.

ROCKWOOL insulation is proud to be adopted in these leading projects in Singapore playing a part in Singapore construction transformation. ROCKWOOL is a leading fire-safe building insulation products in Singapore used for dry wall partition, ceiling, roof, façade and fire rated construction. ROCKWOOL products are approved product by Singapore Fire Safety and Shelter Department and are also listed in Singapore Green Building Council as a green building product.
